Designing a home for the Dongara climate

Orientation, shade, breezes and wind protection: passive design basics for the Mid West coast.

1 min readUpdated 22 October 2026

A home designed for its climate is cheaper to run and more comfortable to live in. Here are the basics for the Mid West coast.

Orientation

Living areas facing north get winter sun and are easy to shade in summer. On a 2.5 acre lot, you have the freedom to position the house for the best aspect, not just to fit the block.

Shade

Wide eaves, verandahs and pergolas keep summer sun off walls and windows. Deciduous trees can add shade in summer and let light through in winter.

Catch the breeze

Coastal sea breezes are a gift in summer. Windows on opposite sides of the house let air flow through.

Shelter from the wind

The coast can be windy. Courtyards, sheds and landscaping can create sheltered outdoor spaces.

Insulation and glazing

Good insulation and quality windows help keep the house warm in winter and cool in summer.
